Definition of Practicum vs. Practical in Alberta:

A practical is an educational session held at the school location to gain more experience in specific topics and to learn practical experience as a R.H.N.
A practicum is held off sight, usually in a clinic setting, to learn how to practice in a specific field as a practitioner.

List of Practicals at CSNN Calgary:

In Alberta, practical sessions are taught at the classroom location under the instruction of an RHN or Naturopathic Doctor. Some of the topics taught in the practical sessions are: Consulting and client skills / Menu Planning, Food Quality & Food Preparation / Mental Health Issues and Nutrition / Hormonal Health / Weight Management / Detoxification / Nutrition that Supports Cardiovascular Health / Blood Glucose Issues / Supporting Immunity / Skin Health / Bone Health and much more.

CSNN offers some off sight practicums at clinic settings. This includes job shadowing as a R.H.N. Our students also go to the Faculty of Medicine at the Foothills Hospital to work at the Cadaver Lab. CSNN has two eco-farm tours, one in the fall and one in the spring to teach the students ecology and learn firsthand how our foods are grown today.

Two graduates of the Calgary location – Barb Thomas R.H.N. & Christina Acevedo R.H.N. – offer holistic cooking class both at the CSNN Calgary location as demo classes and hands on at a professional culinary kitchen throughout the school year. These classes offer a different and unique experience in a culinary aspect with natural nutrition to be able to help clients with their needs in this area.
